aye, or else just cut it the right size first time, measure twice, cut once. not bad though for ur first day building brick

Never use a brick hammer with a bolster .Use a lump hammer.Better to use grinder or risk losing the cut.Modern holed bricks a very fragile..

You're taking 10mm for each joint, but you're measuring it horizontally when the cut face is at angle. You'd get it spot on the first time if you take off 10mm for the vertical face, draw the cut line, then measure 10mm in from that line to make the cut - that'll give you a 10 mm joint on both sides the first time.

@danno1111 Excellent observation danno, you are correct in what you suggest, however you will never get it cut right first time and if you cut too much off you will have to throw out the brick and start again. This is why I recommend this method which will always give you a cut that is too big, but will allow you to build the brick to the line then parallel off the extradose to mark the final cut.
