Such a gorgeously sung "Salome." She was born to sing the role. Sadly she was viciously mocked for her weight (and still is) and I wonder if that kept her from singing the role onstage more. In an interview she even alluded to the discomfort.
Such a big voice capable of such delicacy and flexibility, but stunningly powerful when needed. Strauss sits perfectly in her range: not to low, not too high, right amount of vibrato. Amazing!

She is INSANE!!! One of the greats! I adore her. Met her once.

You show them how it's done, Montserrat! Today's sopranos singing Salome focus too much on the "sounding like a 16 yr old" part. Nonsense. Strauss' vocal composition or this role is clearly meant for a heavy-dramatic soprano, the type who can sing Brunhilde, Turandot, Isolde and Tosca. This is why Birgit Nilsson was such a great Salome (she sang the roles I just mentioned). Caballe sang Turandot, Isolde and Tosca as well. The only other who did a great job in modern times is Maria Ewing

Caballe is a true Strauss singer. The musicianship, the voice, the interpretation--all there and then some. Wonderful! Is Sherrill Milnes the John the Baptist? I gotta find the complete video!

Look at her explode into fire at 6:54
Anyone who dares to claim Caballe couldn't act is seriously misguided. She looks betwitched entirely here.

Again...This is magnificent. I only wish opera companies of today could produce sets, costumes & backgrounds like this one. This is a grand period-perfect Salome, worthy of Oscar Wilde. Caballe is absolutely demonic in this final scene.

its the type of corrupt court that has seen worse lol
This has got to go down as the BEST Salome...at least this was Caballe's best Salome of all her other performances....I'm very interested in knowing where I can buy this LOL.....it's absolutely mind blowing

This was televised in Spain (1972) the subtitles are in Spanish. Caballe could sing and act the heck out of the role (reminds me of Birgit Nilsson) sadly she's an underrated Salome. I don't think I've ever seen a more perfect Salome..the faces she makes, the gestures, the voice...Wondervol!!
