Most probably a group of lions killed the hippo (this doesn't seem to be common) and the male lion came to eat first. Or perhaps it was injured. Hippos are very difficult to hunt because of size and strenght but lions kill even elephants (in some areas). The only animal I've never seen eaten or hunted by lions is the Rhino.

lions can and do kill full grown hippos especially when far from the water.

ive seen videos of two lions jumping on a hippos back, thats when the hippo is tired out
