For two weeks in July, 2009, over seventy alumni, family and friends gathered
for good times on the Yellowstone and Madison Rivers in Montana, and the
Henry's Fork of the Snake River in Idaho. Participants ranged in age from four
to about 80, including one family represented by three generations.
Led by Rugere De Partee '74 and Mike Riggs '85, the group celebrated the 30th
year of a unique tradition at La Verne. They camped together along the
rivers, moving camp every few days. Floaters learned and practiced river safety,
water rescue, and kayaking and rafting skills, rafted rapids, and were drenched
in lively and fun water fights on hot days. They spent a day in the historic
restored gold rush town of Virginia City, Montana, where an old-fashioned
melodrama, candy store, and hand-churned ice cream were highlights.
