The word malt is often used in reference to malted barley. Malted barley is a partially germinated barley seed that has been halted by drying or roasting. This malted barley is the basis of beer. The word Malt is also used when speaking of the fermentable sugar that is extracted from the malted grains. Malt extracts, both liquid and dry, are both produced from the same extracted sugar solution created after mashing the malted barley.
