I had an M17R3 til it turned out to be a lemon. Dell support is probably the worst on the planet and that's enough to keep me away from future AW purchases. I had to up my minutes on my cellular plan because of the time spent calling Dell EVERYDAY for anywhere from 30 min to 2 hours per call. They finally sent me an M18 replacement but I'm done with Dell/AW.

I have exactly the same model at this present time, shoved in a drawer in 20 different pieces, I bought it from a customer whose desktop I had reformatted, for £35, the battery was fucked, the screen was on it's last legs, and the GPU went kaput when I tried to boot it.
Still, the keyboard worked, the DVD drive came in handy, the memory was fine, and the hard drive serves as my backup to this day inside a 2.5" enclosure.
Don't buy an Alienware for a laptop, much better to buy them broken.

Kick ass? Huh. I had nothing but problems with my m7700. A bunch of red vertical lines filled the screen. Got that fixed, and then the battery got shitty and could only hold a charge for a minute or two. Shortly after that, the backlight burnt out. I hate the wear marks that appear as well. I don't know... I had a bunch of problems despite taking great care of it.

how fast does it get hot

Alienware is notorious for getting hot, their first Laptop Motherboards used to burn out after a few uses.

I like portability. I got a MSI-GX620 Gaming Laptop; it just came out. Alienware charges too much...
