Lijiang is more than 800 years old and was a trade spot along the old tea horse road. The old town is famous for its of waterways and bridges. It differs from other ancient Chinese cities in architecture, history and the culture of its traditional residents the Naxi people. It is now on the UNESCO World Heritage List. We were here 1988 (typical back-packer place) and a lot has changed (Major Earthquake, Tourism Development etc). E.g. We listened to the Naxi Orchestra in the local library 20 years ago together with a handful other visitors and now they give great performances in their own theatre for huge crowds. It is still a very charming place.
