The Italian canal city of Venice is visited by more than 20 million people every year.

The locals are complaining that mass tourism has made their canal city dirty, and authorities have launched a campaign urging everyone to keep the city clean.

  • Do you remember the young American kid that went over to Singapore and was caught spray painting property? I think he was "caned." What was interesting was the huge public outcry from Americans stating that this was cruel punishment...

  • I think you can count India out....we may have a problem in our country about garbage disposal but the public that goes out to visit internationally does not do that....dont know about the rest but definitely not Indians.

  • But you live in the UK... But you guys do have tourism soo yeah... I hate high tides, something you wouldn't want to go throught... Getting carried away here

    bye =]

  • Not really. Some places in the U.S. wanted to adopt the practice actually.

  • Actually that's completely INCORRECT. The American public LOVED it. It was our President at the time (CLINTON) who made a mess of things by asking that the young man not receive the proper punishment. AND because of connections to the diplomatic community (LIKE a LOT of OTHER CRIMINALS) he go off lightly.

    No you're wrong....The PUBLIC WANTED the little bastard to be whipped in the manner approved by the host country!

  • According to international tourist associations Americans are going aboard MUCH less than ever before. Actually I doubt that Americans will visit places outside of University-oriented travel in the future. Most people in the USA know that their countries politics are not in vogue & would not travel where they are hated. The best thing is for the USA to halt most all foreign aid as well.

    It's not Americans that litter; most of their cities are quite clean [in areas outside of slums]: it's locals

  • I don't litter. I put wrappers in my pockets and hold on to bottles till I get a chance to dispose them properly.

    I've been doing that since I was a little boy.

    Don't litter!!!

  • You have an uncanny resemblance to buckwheat, from the little rascals.. of course, his bucked teeth went away once he grew up.

  • I doubt it. Americans aren't exactly keen on throwing garbage around, and if you've ever been to America you'd note a minuscule fraction of the litter you can see in Italy, Spain, China, Turkey, or pretty much anywhere else. In all likelihood its a little bit of garbage from everyone, and most from Arabia, China, India, or other burgeoning economies that still have litter issues, but now have enough wealth to visit other countries.

  • BTW, I live in Scotland, So you can probably guess why I hate tourists that ruin our countryside.
