The purpose of a grease trap is to eliminate grease and oil from wastewater that is exiting a building. They are commonly found in restaurants, and it is often required that a grease trap be installed in any location where food is being prepared.

Grease traps slow the flow of wastewater with the use of a holding tank. When the water is slowed down, it cools and allows the grease to separate from the water. The cooled water is then allowed to exit the grease trap while the grease is captured.

The size of a grease trap required depends upon the amount of waste that is produced in a given facility and the dimensions of the waste sinks.

PEXsupply.coms Resource center has a simple calculator that can help you choose the right size grease trap for your establishment.

You will input the measurements of your sink and specify the level of grease you expect to produce. Most restaurants produce a high level of grease.

The calculator will produce a result that recommends the appropriate size grease trap, and the no-hub couplings you will need to connect it to your system. The No-Hub couplings needed are based on the size of the inlet and outlet on the grease trap itself, in this case, 2 inches.

The calculation is simple. Just divide the total area of your sink or sinks that will feed into your grease trap by 231 and then multiply by .75 After this, round up to the next available grease trap size.
