Everything was controversial about it - the fact that the plot is based on an "agreement" between Archie Lee and Babydoll (she marries him, but must remain chaste until her 20th birthday), the fact that she's depicted as a sort of Lolita, the ambiguity (does she sleep with Silva?), and the steamy scene between Babydoll and Silva on the swing (the critics were afraid, when his hand dipped below the screen, that he was doing something sketchy with Babydoll).
