On October 9th, 2010, during fleet week in San Francisco, California, Billy Smith takes a trip back north to meet up with close friends, Jack Duysen and Brad Butler of Team Sporting-Sails. Together they partner up with Russel Albert Daniels of Patch.com to demo the Sporting-Sail in action down some of their favorite local runs through shimmering shadows of spiring redwood groves surrounding Mt. Tamalpais. The spontaneous filming took less than 4 hours and truly captures a raw, behind the scenes approach to what really goes down when getting ready to deploy. Filming was cut short for an evening surf session in the cold, sharky waters at the base of their final downhill skateboarding destination.

Deployers: Jack Duysen, Brad Butler, Billy Smith
Film: Russel Daniels
Edit: Russel Daniels
Film Date: October 9th, 2010
Location: Mt. Tamalpais, California

  • this is sick! how well does it work though?

if i spread out my arms, will i be drastically slowed down? or just a little bit.

  • @garrrrrrrrettttttttt Thanks for watching. The Sporting-Sail helps control speed and stability. Lets say you are going +/-25-30mph and deploy, the resistance will reduce your speed to about +/-5-10mph. You control the Sporting-Sail, the Sporting-Sail does not control you. It is also important to note that slight headwinds can increase this effect, so be mindful of mother nature (as in all sports). Experiment and have fun! For more information, check the website in the link above.

  • I want to actually use it as a sail, have it be in front of me, would I be able to see over it easily? I'd love it if you could respond, thanks.

  • @thatgreggguy Thank you for commenting. Yes, you can use the Sporting-Sail to pull you forward. Works great!

  • Billy, I know you use the sporting sail like you would want the customers to use it as you see fit,...why not, instead of having the sporting sail mainly on your backside, use it as if you were on a boat and use the wind to your advantage to pull you forward and if you want to slow down just swing your arm around like your were putting on a jacket and use the wind to slow you down.

Just thought I'll give you an idea, hope you find it useful and keep up on your success with you and your bro.

  • @me2me23 Thanks for commenting! Really good idea. We have been using it on SUP to pull us forward as well as skateboards, skis and snowboards. Fun stuff for sure! Please keep us posted on your new Hang Gliding design! Would love to try it out. If you need help with R&D or would like to throw around some ideas, just let us know. We would be happy to help. Stay deployed!

  • Cool video guys, I'm designing a prototype that will revolutionize the Hang Gliding industry,...its still on the drawing board, trying to tweak the pros and cons before going full throttle on this.
