Marcus Smart - 6'3 Senior of Marcus Flower Mound High School. High lights of his Junior & Senior seasons, including a few games from his AAU team. In my personal opinion, a top 2 or 3 player in the Country in High School basketball. His name fits him perfectly, arguably the smartest player in the Country as well. Again, these are just my opinions from watching him play over the years.
His buddy Phil Forte, who is, hands down, the best 3 point shooter in the Country, will team up with Smart at Oklahoma State next season. That team is getting loaded up there.
This tandem of Smart and Forte, has won every where they've gone. Their winning is infectious in every way. When Smart is on the floor, you can't turn away, he brings a sort of STAR quality about him when ever he plays. It helps to have Banyard, and AJ Lucky on your team, Not to mention Coach Henderson, who in my opinion, should be coaching at the next level and possibly beyond that, but that's a subject for another date.
He can play every position on the court, and shut down players from 5'5, lightning fast, to nearly 7 foot players and shut them down. Yeah I said it, mainly because I've seen it with my own eyes. He never leaves the court, mainly because he never gets tired. His stamina is legendary.
If you have flaws in your ball-handling, you'll be exposed pretty quickly with Smart because he's telegraphing and studying not only your ball-handling habits, but your offensive and defensive habits as well. He's basically a professor on the court. Yeah, that's his name for me, the PROFESSOR.
He has elite intelligence, elite athleticism, elite skill-set, and most lethal of all, his level of intensity and motivation are elite. His motor never stops, he's built like a monster truck, and his will to win is unprecedented.
He can dominate a game by scoring, or he can dominate a game by doing everything but scoring. Very rare. He can put up 33 if you need him to, or he can shut down your best offensive player, dish out umpteen assists, and pull down more rebounds than your center.
But the key word here is "WIN". Yeah, he wins. He won when I first saw him playing against my 8th grade step-son, he was in the 6th grade, he and Phil Forte, including one of the top Running backs in the country Jonathan Gray, and another great over there at Richland High School Ricky Roberts. Man, that Junior High Summer league Team Texas class back in the mid 2000s will turn out to be a legendary team. But even back in 6th grade, these guys were obliterating teams close to High School level. He won in High School, he won in Summer League, he just wins.
Oklahoma State made a SLAM DUNK when they pulled in Marcus Smart, and Phil Forte is icing on the cake.
They've just won their second consecutive Texas State-Championship, with Forte being the MVP. Also just recently won the Gold Medal for Team USA 18U in Brazil.
