The Berkeley Pit as seen from Rampart Mountain near Butte, Montana. The Berkeley Pit, located in the midst of the largest Superfund environmental clean-up site in the nation, is a now-defunct open-pit copper mine. This is the pit filled with water in this footage. A second, operational pit mine, operated by Montana Resources, Inc., can also be seen in this footage. To the right of the frame, the Yankee Doodle Tailings Pond is also visible.

There was a show on the History Channel recently about this. They were talking about, among other things, how people pay to heal themselves in an abandoned uranium mine. Strange.

The "healing" mine is actually about 15 miles north of the Berkeley, in the town of Basin, which is also home to an artists' refuge. Definitely an interesting place to visit.

first time seeing the moutians,came through the 90 pass and the first thing i saw befor entering butte was a mountian completely stripped and the valley between it and another peak was filled in with what was left over from the striped side,what a shame.then got a look at butte omg this was a fucked up looking place.I know strip mining is its bread and butter but look at the cost. armpit of montana.
