Vintage Trains operated a charter from Birmingham to Manchester on Saturday 20th December 2008; they called it the BBC WM 'Kidney Kids' Christmas Special. The charter was in the capable buffers of 86259 Les Ross (whose owner of the same name was onboard) and 47773 (D1755).

While in the area, the two locos performed a mini-tour from Manchester Piccadilly to Hadfield and back; the latter destination broke new ground for the 1960's built class 86 locomotives, as 86259 became the first one to arrive at the station, once part of the old Woodhead route.

A short journey, but worth paying the reasonable fare of £15, with all the proceeds going towards a worthwhile cause.

Also featuring briefly, was EWS 66024 on a container train from Trafford Park.

Thanks to Woolybak8, trainzarethebest, Bradleigh10, TheXtremeEnthusiast, FlyingEnglishman, badgerjennion, Nathan Bridge (StationEndGroup), Alex Roberts, Les Ross and all other bashers present, for the top company and laughs.

  • Oooh its an (almost) 1960s timewarp train! Looks nice.

  • @soundseeker63 Indeed. You just need maroon or blue & grey liveried carriages (not that I don't like chocolate and cream, if there are any GWR fans watching!) to make the timewarp complete! Cheers soundseeker63!

  • another 5* vid good work

  • Thanks!

  • Good thing I went home straight from Piccadilly I guess.

  • Had a problem myself after the Hadfield spin. Was meant to head over to the Stalybridge buffet for a few pints with some mates of mine and that was aborted due to the major farce at Victoria! We ended up just 'scratching in' a few pubs around Manchester City centre instead!

  • Nice to meet your dad too!

  • Yes, electric blue is more pleasing. Thanks!

  • The same thing happened to me while waiting for about 20 minutes at St Helens Junction; I ended up having to catch two buses back to Sutton Manor, getting home sometime before three o clock. I'm glad to know what it was all down to now - wonder if that affected any services from Warrington Bank Quay as well...

That aside, it was a fab day, even if the bash was a short one. Cheers Brad, and Merry Christmas!

  • What a day that was (expect the tour itself) it was shit. All trains back to Lea Green from Viccy was cancelled (managed to get 1838) after being in viccy for 3 hours due to Staff shortages.
