Bensen-Scott Big Band with Spanky Davis on Trumpet ---
Spanky Davis joined the Bensen-Scott Big Band in 2001 and started rehearsing, making the trip from Bloomingdale, NJ to Mt. Kisco every week. We recorded our first album around that time and this cut was part of that first CD.
It's been said that he was Roy Eldridge's protégée. That is true and all the wonderful stories and tales about him are true, but sitting next to Spanky every week was a very exciting experience. Every note he played was a trumpet lesson in itself. It was quite special. I am extremely grateful to have had him in the band and to know him and call him friend.
This recording was done just before Spanky took ill. I believe this was the last recording he made.
Spanky playing with The Bensen-Scott Big Band was a treat. I felt as if we won the lottery.
Spanky now lives in New Jersey, near Atlantic City. It is my hope to have him sit in the band again and doing what he does better than most . . . Playing that horn!

Love the shallow cup sound and the upper register work that justifies it

A wonderful tribute to a wonderful man. .I played it several times and then Dennis came home and watched it with me. We are both awestruck. Spanky - YOU ARE THE MAN! Seriously, the music warmed my heart and the photos brought tears to my eyes. You are the best Spanky...I am so glad we are friends. I will treasure it. Leslie and Dennis
