This slideshow features photographs taken by Dan Joseph during his visit to Kolkata (Calcutta), India in early 2011. Electrified in 1902, the Calcutta tramway is the oldest operating electric tram system in Asia. This sprawling city is off the beaten tourist path, so Dan's photos give us a rare look at their ancient trams. You'll also glimpse the newer trams.
As decrepit and impoverished as Kolkata may outwardly appear, just beneath the surface is an elusive beauty and charm. I've tried to convey this spirit through both the images and the music in this video. Be sure to watch the entire video because there may be a surprise or two!
