From his 1977 album Heroes

Lyrics:

Sons of the silent age
Stand on platforms blank looks and note books
Sit in back rows of city limits
Lay in bed coming and going on easy terms
Sons of the silent age
Pace their rooms like a cell's dimensions
Rise for a year or two then make war
Search through their one inch thoughts
Then decide it couldn't be done

Baby, I'll never let you go
All I see is all I know
Let's take another way down (sons of sound and sons of sound)
Baby, baby, I'll never let you down
I can't stand another sound
Let's find another way (sons of sound and sons of sound)

Sons of the silent age
Listen to tracks by Sam Therapy and King Dice
Sons of the silent age
Pick up in bars and cry only once
Sons of the silent age
Make love only once but dream and dream
Don't walk, they just glide in and out of life
They'd never die if they could just sleep one day

Baby, I won't ever let you go
All I see is all I know
Let's take another way down (sons of sound and sons of sound)
Oh baby, baby, baby, I won't ever let you down
I can't stand another sound
Let's take another way in (sons of sound and sons of sound)
(Sons of sound and sons of sound)
Baby, baby, baby, fire away!

  • Nobody, and I mean NOBODY was doing anything even remotely similar to this in 1977. This is a man's total immersion into his art, pouring everything he had into what he had to say. England was all about punk rock, rap was just getting started in NYC, and here's David Bowie, living in a self-imposed exile in Berlin creating what to this day sounds fresh and revolutionary. Bowie is the Stravinsky of Rock and Roll, but even the term "Rock and Roll" is too small to encapsulate Bowie!

  • masterpiece, a great song made of bitter taste of sorrow and deep sadness. For those who may intend.

  • I've read some crazy analysis of Bowie songs,Bowie does spontaneous lyrics in the studio so it's pointless trying to put true meaning to them

  • @alarkinsane It's hard to say that Bowie is unique in this and influence of Krautrock is indisputable, even though I don't mean to dissaprove that Bowie is genius. I like him and he is one of the people (Radiohead, Jesus and Mary Chain, Public Image LtD.) that recognized the power of kraut-scene. Rock of Germany helped shaping the eighties and nineties rock.

  • @ProfoundComedyStudio I think you must be drunk

  • This must have been so uncomfortable to make. I was at Hansaton studios last month. Visconti said that they shouldn't have been making music there with the guards looking in. The brixton accent would not have been him at the time after his grand voyage. Still, he did it...

  • It aches, how much I love this song.

  • This avant garde crooning kind of makes Michael Buble look jejune and vapid.

  • @alarkinsane Pink Floyd released 'Animals' in 1977, I'd say it's on par with this record, if not better.

  • This song is about abortion. It took me forever to realize but once I did realize that, it is so obvious. Brilliant song and now the chorus means ten times more, knowing that he ACTUALLY means BABY when he says "baby".

(Or in the chorus he could be giving a voice to the soon-to-be aborted soul in the womb. I still don't know about that part.)
