The latest players Player of the Month Awards have gone to Galway and Dublin.Joe Canning (Galway) and Shane Ryan (Dublin) have been honoured with the Opel Gaelic Player of the Month Awards for July in Hurling and Football respectively.

A worthy winner of the Opel Gaelic Player of the Month Award for July, Dublin midfielder Shane Ryan has been one of the stars of the 2008 football championship, leading his county to their 4th Leinster Football title in a row. The Naomh Mearnόg clubman has been in superb form for Dublin all season playing a pivotal role in the Dubs march to the All Ireland quarter finals.

Commenting on Ryan's selection, former Kerry manager and chairman of the Opel Gaelic Players Football Selection Committee, Jack O Connor said, "On a day when a lot of Dublin players shone, Shane Ryan was powerful in the way he bossed the midfield exchanges. Apart from winning a huge amount of primary possession, he repeatedly drove forward with purpose, delivered accurate ball to the Dublin attackers, and was also on hand to help his defensive colleagues when required. A real masterclass midfield play."

In his debut season for Galway, Joe Canning has lit up the hurling summer with his electrifying performances. An undoubted star in the making, the Portumna clubman contributed hugely to Galway's victories in the Hurling qualifiers against Laois and Antrim before plundering a remarkable 2-12 against Cork in a sensational individual performance.

Commenting on Canning's selection, Chairman of the Opel Gaelic Players Hurling Selection Committee, Donal O Grady said, "Much was expected of Joe Canning before he ever donned the jersey for the Galway senior hurlers and he has delivered in spectacular style. Despite being up against one of hurling's most experienced full-backs in Diarmuid O'Sullivan in the All-Ireland SHC quarter-final, his class shone from start to finish. While he end that evening in Thurles on the losing side, he hit a brilliant 2-12 (1-5 from play) of Galway's total of 2-15, and the followers of the Tribesmen have much to look forward to in the coming years."

Dessie Farrell, Chief Executive of the GPA, said; "I would just like to take this opportunity both Shane and Joe on their magnificent displays during July. While the entire Dublin team really caught fire in the Leinster Final against Wexford, Shane's contribution was immense and despite some stiff competition, it was no surprise to see him picked by his peers. Joe has made a huge impression in his 'rookie' season as a senior hurler and he was one Galway hurler who lost no caste in defeat against Cork."

Commenting on the announcement, Dave Sheeran, Managing Director, Opel Ireland, said, "Opel Ireland congratulates Joe Canning and Shane Ryan, two thoroughly deserving winners of the Opel Gaelic Player of the Month Awards for July. Both players produced outstanding performances for their counties throughout the month, leading from the front and inspiring those around them. Opel Ireland is delighted to be in a position to reward the achievements of two players who have lit up the 2008 championship."
