One of the programs we are learning from is CARE. They have one of the most impressive kids/teen rec centers that we have seen in Africa. Some of the young people are HIV positive. Downstairs students can relax, explore their artistic talents, and just play with other children without fear.
Upstairs there is a very quiet study area with classrooms and a small library. Having a center like this is great for the kids so that they are not made to feel that they are alone and hopeless.
CARE also provides neighborhood learning centers where ANYONE can come and just study, do homework or just read. They are safe and quiet and from what we understand, they are used by many.
