In this second episode of the ESOcast Dr. J takes us to the centre of the Milky Way to talk about a supermassive black hole there located. We will hear from two scientists involved in an unprecedented 16-year long study, which used several of ESO's flagship telescopes to produce the most detailed view ever of the surroundings of the monster lurking at our Galaxy's heart. How were the hidden secrets of this tumultuous region unravelled? Watch this ESOcast and find out.

ESOcast is a video podcast series dedicated to bringing you the latest news and research from ESO - Astronomy made on planet Earth. Here we explore the Universe's ultimate frontier with our host Dr. J, a German astronomer at the ESO. His scientific interests are in cosmology, particularly on galaxy evolution and quasars. Dr. J's real name is Joe Liske and he has a PhD in astronomy.
ESO is the European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere. Created in 1962, ESO provides state-of-the-art research facilities to European astronomers and astrophysicists and is supported by Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Several other countries have expressed a strong interest in joining the organisation. Whilst the Headquarters (comprising the scientific, technical and administrative centre of the organisation) are located in Garching near Munich, Germany, ESO operates, in addition to the Santiago Centre, three observational sites in the Chilean Atacama desert.

@Nick1253 There is an article about the photon's mass in the wikipedia (search with the keyword "photon"). But in general, the light has a double nature either electromagnetic waves or particles called photons. The experiment is that if you put a mirror and a torch, the light reflects at an angle, exactly as if you drop a small ping pong ball (reflects at a specifoc angle same to the vertical axis). So, as particles, photons (the light's elements) are sucked by the black hole.

@wetdream09 well if it does get bigger it will suck in planets! i heard if you get sucked in to a black hole you could travel through time or a parrel universe or ur limbs are misplaced!

@Nick1253 the black hole of our galaxy is so fast it sucks in light!
mkfan1997 9 months ago
@wetdream09 yup, the planets, stars or anything else that it sucks, become a lil small thing in it, but the mass continues the same, that is what black holes are

@hends123
hmm so a black hole is just a giant black ball getting bigger and bigger the more it sucks things in then? mkay...
wetdream09 10 months ago
@wetdream09 things that are sucked by it, become part of it, soo their mass and stuff just become a part of it
