Despite the culture of veneration for the men and women in uniform, life for US veterans is often grim.
Physical and mental illness are common, and on any given night, nearly 300,000 vets, many of them who served in Vietnam, are homeless.
This week on Inside USA, we look at how a new generation of soldiers, is experiencing many of the same realities.

Why is part one August 19 2008 and part two September 19 2008. I think that "August" is an error.

You don'y get it do you? In the English language, defending yout country does not mean attaching another one. To the veterans, I feel sorry for them and I do agree some (not all) did not know what type of war they were going to fight for. Don't get me wrong, I lovr America and it's people; it is just sad that their government did everything in book that it's people did not expect them to do. I am sure Americas are wiser and kinder than the Jewish controlled Bush & Co.

What about the Iraq Veterans Against the War? Trust me, most veterans had no idea what kind of war they were getting themselves into. They had no idea that the government would put their lives on the line for oil and greed. That doesn't justify the vicious acts at Haditha or in Abu Ghraib or the several other atrocities that happened, but there are a significant number of veterans who have become anti-Empire activists on account of the terrible things they saw and did.

I hate to admit that the US Government fooled their people too much...

Greed. What's wrong with the Truth? Scared are we?

True, he was also thinking of the base too, but the media angle is a good point too.

Thanks for another excellent piece, AJE. The "Election Post" segment was especially well done. The U.S. media for the most part treats its audience with contempt by broadcasting non-issues and nonsense.

Veterans defending your country? come on, do me favour. They went to abuse poor Iraqi's who have had none whatsoever to do with 9/11. Missionarymayn, go and see one veteran and ask what kind of war he or she got involved and I promise you will understand it was a war for oil and making money for Bush family and his friends.

It's absolutely disgraceful how America treats its veterans. I'm not a veteran but I have great respect for people that put their lives on the line to defend our country.
