Police harassed old woman in Bulgaria

It is said that the level of civilisation achieved by a society is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable.

This clip contains shocking footage of an event that unfolded right under the noses of Bulgarians in Sofia, on one of the main streets (Count Ignatiev) nearby a church. The police tried to arrest the cameraman for taping the incident.

The incident in question involves a typical Bulgarian police office harassing a very old lady. The old lady was selling herbs and spices on the main street. As a pensioner she needed the additional money to buy medicine to treat her heart disease.

The police officer did not show his ID, and took the liberty of messing up the old woman's stall and confiscating her smallgoods as though it were contraband, on the grounds that she "did not have a permit to sell on the street." It was obvious that the Bulgarian police officer was expecting a bribe. He did not receive one, and terrorised the old lady until she was in tears.

A witness in the clip testifies that the old lady did not incite the police officer, and that the said policeman used excessive force.

The Bulgarian police certainly have their priorities in order. Bulgaria is a country renowned for being controlled by organised crime, some of which is exported to EU countries such as the UK. But they are going after the "big fish" here - old ladies.

Who is next? The handicapped? Babies (especially those born in Libya)?
