@ButtsexV2 Dulcimer frets are placed in position for a diatonic scale (natural tones only, no accidentals). The maple fret markers here "fill in the gaps" of the red wood fret lines that mark the intervals that are usually marked on a bass which is the minor 3rd, perfect 4th, perfect 5th, major 6th and octave which fit in no common scale. There are too many accidentals. The diatonic scale has no accidentals - only natural tones.

@ButtsexV2 The fret markers are in the standard intervals (every half step or semi tone) but the 3, 5, 7, 9, 15, 17, 19th frets are with a red coloured wood while the rest are yellow wood. The 12th fret is yellow wood but bookended by strips of the red wood. It's hard to see but I've seen many pics of this bass over the last couple of decades (and seen it in concert once) so I'm kinda used to it. Look for a good pic of it online and you can see it a lot clearer.

@myfootinurass It's a fretless bass. Les changed his mind right before the bass was finished so Carl Thompson (the builder) took the frets out and replaced them with strips of wood. That's why they look weird.
