Nothing beats a few hours of action along the CSX W&A Subdivision in northwest Georgia on a Saturday afternoon. Caught the following four trains:
1. Southbound ballast train at Kennesaw, GA led by CSX #2495 and CSX #2485 (both ex-Conrail SD50s de-rated to 3000hp SD50-2 for MofW service).
2. Northbound manifest freight train at Acworth, GA led by BNSF #5195 (C44-9W), BNSF #4908 (C44-9W), BNSF #137 (GP60M) and CSX #8368 (SD40-2). Taken in front of the town caboose looking south towards the former old mill, now the Old Mill Restaurant.
3. Northbound manifest freight train at Acworth with lots of CSX power. Shot from the same spot as the previous train. The six CSX locomotives are #329 (CW44AC), #4823 (SD70MAC), #84 (CW44AC), #8426 (SD40-2), #8038 (SD40-2) and #5252 (ES44DC).
4. Southbound manifest freight at Acworth but shot from the opposite side of the tracks facing the downtown business district. The CSX clunkers leading this train are #8118 (SD40-2), #7552 (C40-8) and #7570 (C40-8).
The action here is hot; after starting slow, six trains blew through in a little over 90 minutes—the four above plus the two I just missed because I didn't have time to setup or was out of position.

  • At 2:46 what kind of freight car is that and what do they carry? I've seen them before but I don't know what they are used for.

  • those are trash (garbage) containers. heading to or returning from a landfill somewhere. a lot of larger cities in the northeast and midwest ship trash to more rural areas for disposal in landfills (so these are probably empties returning to chicago, detroit, etc)

  • awesome video!!! gotta come railfan with ya sometime!

  • ha-i was actually shooting video between acworth and cartersville today after a meeting i had in marietta. however, the lighting was horrible and i dont think any of my video is good enough to post. will see.

  • I saw you video taping the BNSF train in Acworth when I was driving by. I tried beating it to Emerson but it beat us my Dad and I. But awesome compilation of today's trains! I'd give you 5 stars but it said there was an error. Mabey later.

  • Haha, you should have come by and shared some of the great BP gas station hot dogs we had..ugh. I didn't realize until after we got home that my kids are yelling "BNSF and Santa Fe!" before you can even see the BNSF locos on the video--they were staked out doing advance recon on the caboose :)

  • Hey Dixieline, why do they have 4-5 engines? Is it because of the hilly terrain in NW GA?

I live in Hull, GA about 4 miles from the tracks. When they pass through Athens, Hull and Colbert they most always have 2 or 3 at most.

You ever come out this way? If you do, I would love to meet up with you!

  • OK thanks! great video!

  • Great stuff there!

There ain't nothing like the CSX in Dixie.

    Thanks for posting.
