EPA Region 7 Grant to Help Anhydrous Ammonia Facilities Reduce Releases

EPA provided a grant to the Missouri Department of Agriculture and Missouri State Emergency Management Agency to reduce and prevent anhydrous ammonia releases caused by human error, transportation accidents, equipment failure and thefts. Anhydrous ammonia is a source of nitrogen fertilizer widely used for corn, milo and wheat. It is also used as an industrial refrigerant. Inhaling anhydrous ammonia can cause lung irritation and severe respiratory injuries. All facilities that handle, process or store more than 10,000 pounds of anhydrous ammonia are subject to the Clean Air Act's Risk Management Program. EPA's chemical safety requirements protect the health and safety of the public, employees at facilities, emergency responders and the environment.
