Mumia Abu Jamal placed on death row 28 years ago

It's been 28 years since Mumia Abu Jamal was placed on death row for killing a Philadelphia police officer. The controversial 1981 trial has often been referred to by civil rights activists as a police cover up, implying Mumia had been framed for the killing of the police officer. The case was riddled with inconsistencies during it's initial trial and prompted an international movement to release Mumia and label him a political prisoner of the United States.




On his 56th birthday, organizations, supporters and Mumia's legal team came to the department of Justice to give attorney general Eric Holder a letter and petition calling for a civil rights investigation into Mumia's case. An official from the DOJ addressed the protesters and said he would hand the material to the attorney general.
