This is the second of a two part short film from Terence's Mechanical tips focusing on the Timing, points and condenser of the jawa engine. In association with: www.townsreunited.com
well this is the correct method to set the points. the point should open just before the TDC . 1 thav means 25.4 mm so when you set 14 thav of point gap it around 300 mm .
Hi , Do you have the timing advance settings for Jawa 638 / so as to use strobe light , This would be Handy , As you noticed i prefer to use multimeter , in this way you never need to have ignition on , so no worries about burning coil's out . All the best . Terry
@TroyaE117 Hi , Thank's for your comment , sound's like another good way to set timming . Good point aswell about not leaveing ignition on to long , I try to over come this by only switching engine kill switch on once ready to cheak , Thank's , I should have pointed this out . Cheer's Terry
Rather than use the Multimeter, just switch on the ignition and being a radio close to the bike, with the radio tuned between stations. When the points open you will hear a clearly-audible "click".
Don't leave the ignition on too long or the ignition coils will overheat.
hi there where would i be able to aqquire a new ignition system for my jawa 350 twin 1986? like this one. having trouble getting a regular spark. condensers points and maybe coils? any information would be much appreciated. Mark, Walsall West mids
@Aguijon1982 Hi I agree with you . I've found that the point's work much better. The electronic system i had was a gotronic . I also found that when i accelerated with the electronic system fitted it would start pinking or suffer preignition . Like a topend rattle which went away once i fitted the point's . Thank's for your comment . Terry .
I personally think that the jawa runs better on points than with electrnonic. The electronic system of this bike makes it work on 0,4mm, that is a bit delayed...
Of course, on electronic each cylinder works equally and the engine sounds perfectly tuned...but the bike accelerates slower and seems to have less power.
And im not a hundred percent sure, but that would explain the difference in power between the 638´s (19kw) and the late 640 (17kw) ?
@pokemonihovno Hi , Thank's for your comment , I agree with what you say. You made a good point . Because my Jawa has 12 volt alternater , It may only cost £70. All the best . Terence.

miniporter :
It only works for contact breaker points, but works well. It will not work for electronic ignition. We need a strobe for that one, I'm afraid.

You may find a dial guage more accurate.
