I take the four beats of each measure (in 4/4 time) and animate them. Then I put the appropriate counting in the box. At the end of the exercise, I switch back to just reading from the page. You should feel the divisions of the beat. If you are a visual person, like myself, it's almost as if the blocks are a viseo-spacial awareness as you play music, or sight-read. For more on rhythm check out my book, "How to Read Musical Rhythm Like a Genius" -- at Patternpiano.com

  • hey folks,i was wondering if you could help me with a problem i'm having.I know how to listen out for different note durations, but my friends can all hear the beat that you start counting from right in the middle of a song, they also know when to start counting the measure over and when it also changes time signatures.I don't know what I'm listening for when I do this so I'm always wrong and off beat, what kind of a cue am I listening for to start a new measure?
