I owned the AJS model 18 'statesman'. I think it was a 1956 made but I bought it in the late 1960's. It was a marvelous touring bike as the engine was so torquey I hardly had to change gear and I could count the 'strokes' at 60mph. Its only real fault was the mechanical regulator for the dynamo. If it fails it can allow a 'backflow' of juice from the battery back into the dynamo and motorise it. When it happened the dynamo drive chain would snap and blow off the primary chain cover.
great compression!
