In November 2011, San Francisco will elect a mayor in a highly competitive election. Its method of election will be ranked choice voting (also known as instant runoff voting), which has been used in every November in the City for elections since 2004.
The Irish American Democratic Club held a mayoral reform in July. (Note that on Oct. 27, 2011, the Republic of Ireland will elect a new president with ranked choice voting.) One question posed to the candidates was about ranked choice voting and, more broadly, the tenor of the campaign. The candidates had one minute for their answers.
Here are the comments of state senator Leland Yee and Board of Supervisors President David Chiu. The two candidates were the frontrunners in a citywide poll released in June 2011.
