Hi, my name is Josh Kallenberg and I'm here at the Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles, California. I've been flying professionally for about 13 years, and now I have the pleasure of flying this Gulfstream G450 which is a lot of fun and exciting. And today I'm going to talk to you about becoming a pilot. What are pilot salaries nowadays? Well, they vary of course. With every job, whether the airlines or with corporate or private. As a flight instructor you'll make anywhere from 20 to 30 dollars an hour. Again, mind you, you're not working 40 hours a week usually. A good rule of thumb is take your hourly rate, times it by 1,000, you make $20 an hour you might make somewhere around $20,000 a year. You get a job flying for the commuters, the regionals, or again some charter operations, you might expect pay in the teens. You might need to take a second job on the side. But these are all things we do because we love flying. As a co-pilot for any of these commercial or corporate charter operations the pay is going to be lower. It could be somewhere in the teens up into 50 and 60,000 dollars. Let's say you've upgraded to a captain position, salaries really again could range anywhere again in the smaller aircraft, smaller jets, turboprops -- 40 to 60 to 70,000 dollars. When you start getting to bigger aircrafts you start breaking into the over $100,000 mark -- maybe 150s. And in certain airlines they'll break the 200,000 mark. Again completely varies with time of service and which company you're with -- they all vary.

  • Funny how some garbagemen get paid more than pilots, doesn't add up.

  • I'm a CFI. I don't make 30 and hour. I don't know any CFI on the east coast who does. I work weekends and do it for fun and to put in the hours needed to maintain my CFI. I have a friend who flies corporate. I've sat right seat many times as safety pilot in his Cheyenne. He's been out of work more often than anyone I know and has a part time job selling scratch and dent furniture. Flying for money is not for those who like to eat on a regular basis.

  • F/O working at the gulf ... making 110k a year

  • If you want to make the big bucks then you have to fly the brown trucks. Big Brown hands down pays their pilots the most.

  • I know a DC-10 pilot who became a organic farmer and loves it!

The flying became mundane, and now he drives a green and yellow John Deere.

  • I'm an Engineer in my mid 30's and wanted to go full training through ATP, but after I learned it would take me 15 years to make what I make as an Engineer now, the dream crashed very rapidly. I should have done it while I was younger.

  • @abc123jakester @abc123jakester I'm the same but Im 16 I live in Cork! My only hold back is how expensive it is will probably get a loan my dream is to fly for Aer Lingus! Who would you hope to fly for? You should go to a flight seminar there was one in Dublin last week
