  • nice shooting

im still working up my 405g fn ill be trying slower burning powder soon.

    thanks again for the vid

  • @auerdoan I do not have a chronograph, but I think the velocity is around 1100 fps. This comes from similar loads in a book by Mike Veniterino about shoooting buffalo rifles. I have a shoogting budy that shoots both black powder and smokeless powders with equally good results. Good shooting to you.

  • i have a marlin 45-70 and am loving it..

what grain bullet are you using? and how fast do you like them to go? for that range

  • @auerdoan This rifle is a 1874 Sharps replica. I shoot a 535 gr Postell hand cast lead bullet. This is in front of 67 gr of FFg Goex Black Powder. The rifle weighs 9.5 lbs. The weight along with the black powder give a very pleasant recoil. This day I shot about 80 rounds without a sore shoulder. The range has gongs from 100 yds to 500 yds so you have a nice varriety of ranges to practice at. As you can hear, it takes a while to go the 500 yards, but when it gets there it hits hard.

  • i love the sound of it flying through the air. would you say that is a long range shot for the 45-70?

if what is an average distance?

  • @MrSaber152

Well, competative shoots have targets from 200 yards to 1000 yards. The serious shooters can get groups of 5 inches at 300 yards with iron sights. The effective hunting range would be less than that for most people. This video is shooting at 500 yards and it takes about 3 seconds before you hear the bullet to get to the target. There is over 8 feet of arch at 500 yards and over 40 feet at 1000 yards. It is just a lot of fun.

  • Theres lot to be learned from the black powder. i think if i get the fps to match that of bp than there is lots more data out there for me to use. cant weight to try some heavier bullets.

looks like i need to find a longer distance fireing range aswell haha.

    Pale Alto here i come..
