how arrogant to think that other's life style as sad..
it's natural not to talk much with strangers at early monday morning train to work.
will you feel like a chat in that chaos? and they won't think of you as odd for not saying hi to passer-by in asia.

The silence is unbelievable. Nobody speak. They look like robots. I feel sad for them.

@Piruppero Well - this was taken in 1991. I was one of them (but not on this particular morning). I used this train line from that station for 16 years. Actually I used to feel sorry for myself while being a sardine inside, but conditions are better now. Regarding talking - it's considered rude to talk on the train in the morning I think, but you should see some trains late on Friday night! They can be very noisy then! - LHS

Simple solution - RAISE THE FARES. Problem solved.

That wouldn't work in Tokyo. The roads are clogged up all the time anyway, and if you put all these people into cars, the cars wouldn't fit on the roads! If they did fit, then these people would have no place to park the cars when they got to work. But anyway, this was taken in 1991 - they've added more trains and lines since then, so it's n ot so bad now. - LHS

Again, simple. RAISE THE TOLLS. Actually, not as simple as that - you need to raise the fares during peak periods, and lower them during slack times.

What you're suggesting then is that everyone just stay home and not go to work! That would free up the trains and roads, but then the economy would collapse and there would be food riots, etc. Keep in mind there are over 30,000,000 people in metropolitan Tokyo... - LHS
