ANCHOR:
It was a time of remembrance for residents of Hiroshima, Japan, today. Exactly 63 years ago, an atomic bomb was dropped on their city. Let's take a closer look.

STORY:
Survivors of the blast and families of the victims, assembled at the Peace Memorial Park near "ground zero", the spot where the bomb detonated, killing thousands and levelling the city. They came to mark the 63rd anniversary of the atomic bombing of their city and to renew calls for the abolition of nuclear arms. Dignitaries, including Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, attended the ceremony.

[Yasuo Fukuda, Japanese Prime Minister]:
"I pledge, here in Hiroshima, that Japan will stick to the three non-nuclear principles of not possessing, producing or permitting the introduction of nuclear weapons to the country, and lead the fight for the abolishment of nuclear weapons and permanent peace in the international community."

People at the park, and throughout the city, observed a minute of silence, in memory of those who perished.

Bells at temples and churches rang and passengers in cars bowed their heads in remembrance of the dead.

The Hiroshima bomb unleashed a mixture of shockwaves, heat rays, and radiation that killed close to 140,000 people.

Since the end of World War II, many Japanese survivors of the blast have been battling cancers and other long-term effects of the bomb.

  • @josfol chinga tu madre pendejo que eua tampoko es inocente de nada todos los paises cometieron sus crimenes de guerra solo que a los aliados nadie se los recrimina japon pago de mas nada justifica la muerte de gente inocente

  • The japs deserved it. They started the war against people in Asia and had to take the consequences. They behaved as real barbarians against them, especially in China.

So please, do not talk me about innocent japanese that died cause the atomic bombs. What about millions of innocent people in Asia japanese soldiers had killed, brutally tortured and raped!!! The worst thing is that up today the government still has not even given a hearty apology to them. Shame on you all the japanese!!!!

  • look at that theres thousands of people at that memorial.

If they are still angered by this 63 years later, I think USA better be wary of Japan. Definitely cannot trust them.

  • It's not the country itself, it's the government.

We're not supposed to be a Democracy, but a Republic.

  • taylorswift75,

    I love the US

but I am highly critical of the US govt which is corrupt and just like terrorists, do not think of the civilians its actions affect.

)verwhelming power did not stop the attacks on 9/11.

What could have stopped the attacks on 9/11 is a US govt that gave up its empire instead of catering to the profit agenda of the bloated, corrupt, greedy, wasteful military/industrial pork laden corporate welfare entitlement complex, all in the name of patriotism.

  • if you dont like the united states and its overwhelming power. GET OUT! i know how intimidating we are and how everyone that is not a U.S. citizen is jealous, but come on. your a citizen. treat your couuntry with some respect and stop bashing it. like i said, if you dont like this country, GET OUT

  • Thats true, show no weakness.

Withdrawl shows that we don't have to waste our time somewhere in order to be mighty.

The Romans were born with free will, what can I say?

A soldier's job by definition is to be in harms way, its what they do, its what they knew they signed up for. Soldiers are paid to do their job. Nothing wrong with actually making them do their job.

  • magicmaker15,

Weakness must not be shown to an enemy ?

What does it show to the enemy when the US govt pulls out of Lebanon, Vietnam, Canada and accepts a cease fire from N. Korea ?

What does it show to an enemy when Jesus told the Jews not to defend Jerusalem ?

Could it show that the US govt sometimes is "man enough" to not put the lives of US soldiers deliberately into harm's way ?

  • The Romans were created with free will, what can I say? Dominance assures peace.

  • magicmaker15,

    Dominance assures peace ?

So what was Jesus thinking when He told the Jews not to defend Jerusalem but to flee when the Romans came to destroy it ?
