HIP-HOP: BEYOND BEATS AND RHYMES is a riveting documentary that examines representations of gender roles in hip-hop and rap music through the lens of filmmaker Byron Hurt, a former college quarterback turned activist. Conceived as a loving critique from a self-proclaimed hip-hop head, Hurt examines issues of masculinity, sexism, violence and homophobia in todays hip-hop culture.

  • wow, a big eye opener for me, I love that. Thanks for the upload, and thank you Humon for taking up the topic. :)

  • The sad thing about it is, despite this useful information, most of us don't even plan to do anything about it. Prove me wrong and spread the word guys, come on! Let's make a difference. One voice can make a difference. One million can change the world, forever.

  • @beautiful11568i've talked to a lot of people about the subject of our music and how its affecting us and the conversation always seems to lead to people agreeing about what "good music" is, all agreeing that they like it, and then agreeing that no one else wants to hear it. ironic isnt it?

  • Steven Hill was outted as a gay for trying to get with some rapper.

  • aren't a lot of people being hurt.

  • there is always Prodigy from Mobb Deep and his track Black Devil to explain how a thugged out mc turns into something clever...probably a slap in the face of a lot of people.

  • they need immortal technique in this video

  • Chuck D said it, it´s on the Rappers to decide if the will accept being depicted as idiots blaming executives is just pointing fingers

  • Chuck D is real hip hop

  • WOW! just watched all 6 parts - thank YOU Byron Hurt for making this - such an eye opener... real talk! Time for the men to stand up, not leave the decisions up to the White Folk in Suits to decide what gets aired - there MUST be record labels run by conscious black men and women that can turn the tide!?

  • jus an fyi the owner of mtv is a fucking jew, not white

  • @Maggotblake1. Dear brother, my comment about being new to Black culture was not meant to offend, -- African Americans lead the whole world forward in ways far out of proportion to numbers and are probably the most culturally influential group on the planet -- but for me, I've never lived in a mainly African American city before, it's new and I'm having fun with it. Please pardon any offense I didn't mean to give.
