@alicepotter Oh my goodness... why have I never thought about the song that way! I always imagined it as Regina singing, but you're right, it's a rapist singing ... which honestly makes the song make so much more sense... thank you for the imput! Now to triple-million click the repeat button.

this song gives me chills everytime i listen to it.

Oh, and a thing she keeps repeating, that wasn't written in the lyrics in the description: "wanna bet so's her love".
-
I think, this is my new favourite song!!! -3 -3 -3 Regina!!!!

@potatoesplanks: "why shouldn't it be me" is simply describing how the rapist tries to rationalize his upoming actions. Why can't I have her? Why is it so wrong? A sick thought. This song is amazing. So scary!

Only Regina could write a song about rape from a rapist's point of view, and still manage to make it sound sexy without losing the dark aspect of it. How she manages to slip into the skin of so many different characters and personalities and authentically capture their mindsets is beyond me. Now I'm not sure if a male artist could write such a song without catching flack for it.

It's obvious here:
"Don't put a stumbling block in front of someone who can't see
Don't put a beautiful body in front of someone who's hungry,"
And when she sings: "Why shouldn't it be me?...her body was free" He's saying why can't he be the man to have her? Her body was free means he can take her without permission if he wanted to.
Also "I wasn't even her first so don't blame me"
I think it's definitely about a rapist but if you have other theories would love to hear em.

@ritapham why do you think that? at first i thuoght she was just jealous of that pretty girl. it does seam a little eerie. but how did you think of that?
-
yes i think that her early stuff is more fit to her way of being. the last albums are beautiful, so upbeat, but this is so unlike anything else. she is my hero:):):)

Holy shit this is a song about wanting to rape someone. INTENSE.
God I love Regina and she continually surprises me with her lyrics.
This is an amazing song. I hate it that most of her songs that have deep and beautiful lyrics take a back seat to songs like "Better" and "Fidelity" Not that I don't like ether of those songs, I love them both, I just wish people would appreciate songs like this too.

She's very private about her personal life, and like you said, it doesn't really matter what her orientation is. Maybe that's why she doesn't talk about her personal life in interviews and stuff. I don't think Regina is gay, because she has made a few comments that lead me to think she likes boys, but you never really know. Most recently, she told an interviewer that she finds Leonard Cohen sexy. And the interviewer was like, um awkward balloon and Regina said "Maybe it's a Jew Thing" teehee.
