The world lost a great guy. RIP Ron. Caution- video gets sad at the end :( Ronald Edward Santo 1940-2010 Ron left this world ~Dec 3 2010. He grew up in Seattle but Chicago became his home when at the young age of 20, he began a legendary career as Cubs third baseman. He later joined the Cubs WGN broadcast team and since 1996 he has provided "color" while Pat Hughes called the games. As a player and broadcaster, he rarely missed a game...unless he was having cardiac bypass, limbs amputated or fighting the cancer that ultimately took his life. Ron always set an example of positivity in his public life. Perhaps the greatest insult was being snubbed by the hall of fame all these years, but Ron even took that in stride. Baseball experts have argued that his baseball numbers alone merit his inclusion in the hall of fame. I'd venture to say the sheer number of games he played or broadcast must be up there, his love of and dedication to the game was unsurpassed, and the number of lives he touched through baseball and other endeavors was immense. This is why he was great man. Consider donating to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund) to honor the great life of Ron Santo.
