A spike in diagnoses of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other mental disorders has fueled an unprecedented reliance on pharmaceutical medications to treat children, with long-term effects that remain unknown. Democracy Now! speaks with Canadian physician and best-selling author, Dr. Gabor Maté.

Dr. Maté argues that these responses are treating surface symptoms as causes while ignoring deeper roots. He says children are in fact reacting to the broader collapse of the nurturing conditions needed for their healthy development.

  • @TheMidwestsk8ter ye, but it's not that easy. I mean we need to change the value we have, I see that as the bigest problem or obstical.

  • @NiclasTimle89 That is the idea lol, were living in a society based off of comepetion. If we want to see a diffrent human behavior we change the enviroment we need to produce a society based on helping others.

  • @TheMidwestsk8ter could be, or something els. I just don't think this is healthy for us. If you got an other idee I want to hear it :).

  • @NiclasTimle89 Resource based economy

  • the more you learn about the system and how humans work, the brains and the body. the more u realise that the system we have is very, very, very wrong for us. And there is not only human problems in this system. I can't understand why people don't want to change or see that we need to change. If not mother nature is importent to keep healthy we can atleast try to keep the kids healthy. But to do that we need to change the system totaly. I hope we can make it soon together.

  • excellent interview

  • ohhh that was deep. the phase acting mean u pretreating behavior that words which you ain't to say in language

  • ohh that was deep.behavior in words that, that

  • @claudelebel55 Agreed but, there's a but I know. we work most of our lives even with the technology we have today that all work or a big part, could be automated and thus have ample time for family. Society needs to GROW UP. I could decide to stay home with my children but the present paradigm doesn't leave me a choice. I would be poor and would not be able to afford a better quality of life for my kids.

  • @boumar19721972 I've already watched moving forward but I disagree with your beginning statement to some extent. Sure a supportive system is helpful but what are you going to do in the meantime, ignore your children? Fact is values are pretty screwed up these days and people waste a lot of money and time on useless distractions. Conscious choices can be made now and support found now if that is one's intention.
