Newspaper reports of the events leading up to and following the Lincoln-Douglas debates bring life to the underlying issues of the
times—and the strong emotional current that precipitated Abraham Lincolns election to the Presidency just two years later. Although the question of slave or free states is at the forefront of the debates, the real issue of the day is easily evident: Who will decide any issue, the Federal government or the individual state? An LCA release. 25 minutes, color.

  • OMG

  • wonderful job but historically misleading, probably by accident.

Lincon's real quote was quite different -- he said IF a territory that DID NOT have slavery present, would vote for slavery, we would have no choice.

The video gives an incorrect impression -- Lincolln was actually setting up an impossibility

  • awsome
