This new composition was specially composed for the four string instruments pipa, erhu, yangqin and guzheng. The composer adapted folk melodies from his native land in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, depicting the beauty of the waterscape and the vivid rural scenery in southeast China. The music explores and showcases the characteristics of each individual instrument and playing techniques as well as the various colours, effects and dynamics the Silk String Quartet can produce. For example, in the second movement the players imitate the sound of old water wheels by hitting and plucking unusual parts of their instruments to create vivid special effects. The three movements are: Dark Sampan, Water Wheel and Fish Pond.
