Everyone takes the overnight train back to Hanoi departing from Lao Cai (almost at the Chinese border). Lao Cai is only a few hours by road from Sapa. Tour organizers drop you off in the late afternoon at the train station square. With nothing to do until your train leaves, we just sat around, had our boots cleaned, ate and schmoozed.

There are 3-5 trains each night ranging from hard seat to the luxurious Victoria Sapa Express, only bookable if you stay at the Victoria Sapa Hotel.

  • Well I didn't think it was nice at all to call it the "low class" section of the train!!! For goodness sake, have some manners! It's not "low class", it's just cheap seats. Yeesh, why come to Viet Nam if you're going to be such a snob.

I've taken the overnight train, and loved it - and I didn't need to buy a whole berth to love it, either.
