I was born on this mountain a long time ago
Before they knocked down the timber and strip-mined the coal
When you rose in the mornin' before it was light
To go down in that dark hole and come back up at night

I was born on this mountain, this mountain's my home
She holds me and keeps me from worry and woe
Well, they took everything that she gave, now they're gone
But I'll die on this mountain, this mountain's my home

I was young on this mountain but now I am old
And I knew every holler, every cool swimmin' hole
Til one night I lay down and woke up to find
That my childhood was over and I went down in the mine

I was born on this mountain, this mountain's my home
She holds me and keeps me from worry and woe
Well, they took everything that she gave, now they're gone
But I'll die on this mountain, this mountain's my home

There's a hole in this mountain and it's dark and it's deep
And God only knows all the secrets it keeps
There's a chill in the air only miners can feel
There're ghosts in the tunnels that the company sealed

I was born on this mountain, this mountain's my home
She holds me and keeps me from worry and woe
Well, they took everything that she gave, now they're gone
But I'll die on this mountain, this mountain's my home

Steve's performance of "The Mountain" from the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2005. My favorite version of my favorite song.

  • This song gives me chills still after hundreds of times listening. I have spun this disc in the cd player so many times the laser 'bout wore a hole in it! Have the LP now and it sounds soooo good. Good job Steve pairing with the legendary Del McCoury band. This album will go down in history as one of the best bluegrass albums of all times. I dont know how you do it Steve. Thanks for sharing your talent with the world.

  • Saw Steve and the Dukes an Duchesses last night in Derby, UK.Have posted my own version of this wonderful sad song.

  • Hey, what can I say about Steve Earle? He's one of the best singer/songwriters together with Bruce Springsteen, John Hiatt, Ryan Adams and Tom Petty.

  • Goosebumps.....

  • nice ! です.

  • superb just superb

  • Very somber & retrospective lyrics in light of the mining tragedy in WV

  • Wow. There are a lot of people I have never seen in concert and would have liked to have seen, and Steve Earle is about at the top of my list. Thanks for sharing this timely video.
