The Pasta Dinner for the 2011 Space Coast Marathon took place in the Apollo/ Saturn V Complex at the Kennedy Space Center. Ms. Kathrine Switzer was the keynote speaker. Ms. Switzer is the first woman to break the gender barrier of the Boston Marathon. Her story continued with her being the driving force behind the inclusion of a women's marathon in the Olympic games. Everyone has seen Joan Benoit take the lead at mile 4 and keep it until she took the first Gold, but Kathrine was the driving force behind including the women's marathon in the Olympics. Someone had to go to these countries who all looked at women as inferior physically and convince them to allow a marathon team...

Kathrine Switzer single handedly changed the way women are seen, by both men and other women alike. She stood up and said "I can do that, so can you." In challenging women to compete at the Olympic level she also inspired men to push themselves further. Oprah called her a motivational force.
It was an honor to hear her story in person and a thrill to meet her. I told her she was the sexiest woman in the room!
Thank you to the Space Coast Marathon staff and the Kennedy Space Center staff for their tireless work to make this event as flawless as it was.
Stay tuned for highlights of the Space Coast Marathon Race itself!!!
