While the pilots were trying to tend to a troublesome suction sampler at 560 meters (1840 feet), a large burst from the Brimstone Pit (which clearly has two side-by-side eruptive vents) almost engulfs the vehicle in an ash plume. The Jason ROV is operated by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution as part of the National Deep Submergence Facility which is jointly funded by the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.
