It depends on if "European" means someone who played basketball in Europe or someone born in Europe. Kukoc and Petrovic were legends in European basketball and very good NBA players. However, Nowitzki carried his team to a championship at the very highest level (i.e. the NBA). Kukoc may have won NBA championships, but he was only the third best player on those teams. Petrovic, unfortunately, never had a chance to show what he could do at the highest level.

nowitzki's achievement is the greatest so far, but nowadays many europeans play in nba, some even cloes to nowitzki's level (pau). other europeans will become MVP's.
does that mean the greatest should always be someone from current times?
no other europeans had everything in their games like ćosić and kukoč, no one was as complete, and no one was ever as dominant as petrović

I think you have to say that Nowitzki is the greatest European player of all time. He's won the NBA MVP award and (more importantly) carried his team to an NBA championship.

why did you start such stupid measuring who is better player? The fact is the we loved the most Drazen Petrovic but all in all no one european player will ever have carreer as Toni Kukoc. Go through his CV and you will not believe. Look at the fact from the same competition where Drazen played, 1990 argentina, MVP Toni Kukoc. Gasol and all this guys are not comparable to ex yugoslavian team and Toni kukoc.

@ajkaramba No way. Don't get me wrong, he was a wonderful player but not the most talented european ever. Petrovic, Gasol, Nowitzki, Parker... were or are franchise player. Kukoc was a superb role player but that is a different dimension.
