When 2009 dawned, 14-year-old Anuththara Kavindi Jayawardene drew up several New Year resolutions she hoped to fulfil during the year. I will donate Rs. 200 of my pocket money to the Sri Lanka Army; I will try to be friendly even with my enemies, and I will consume only five pizzas this year, she wrote in her notebook.Sadly, she would not live to fulfil her New Year wishes. Kavindi took her life on 22/7/2009, leaving her friends, family and country in a state of shock and grief. Kavindi, an only child, was a Grade 9 English medium student at leading Colombo girls school, Musaeus College.

According to Kavindis mother, Sandya Kumari Jayawardene (45), just one week before the family tragedy mother and daughter went shopping for clothes, and Kavindi had wanted to buy two white frocks.

I asked her why she wanted white, and whether she was thinking of going to a funeral, the mother told the Sunday Times. We never dreamt we would be attending a funeral from our own house, or that it would be Kavindis funeral. Kavindis suicide makes no sense to her parents. She loved and respected life, Mrs. Jayawardene said. We cannot understand why she would have done this. She showed no signs of stress, fear or depression. Her parents described their dead daughter as a loving child, a hard-working student, and a devout Buddhist. Kavindi excelled in information technology, her mother said. She loved to be with her computer.

She would offer flowers to the Lord Buddha at the beginning of the day and at the end of the day, Mrs Jayawardene said. For our birthdays, she would make a beautiful gift for my husband Athula and myself. She wanted to give us something she had made herself, not bought from a shop. One year she made me a lovely red pearl bracelet.

When she was boarded at a family friends home for three months, at the time her father was undergoing a kidney transplant, Kavindi would call daily to ask about her fathers condition.

She worried whether her father would survive the operation, her mother said. Kavindi took her life after the school authorities took her to task for bringing a mobile phone to school. The school has refused to allow the newspapers to talk to the teachers at Musaeus and Kavindis classmates

  • Never new her but she looks like a very nice girl, God has plans for all of us, and now all we can do is be happy that Kavindi had a short and nice plan, envy her for she does not have to undergo the wrath of humanity, May the noble triple jem and God bless her and may she for ever rest in peace, Dimi A.

  • Maybe she was just too good for this earth. She has a far away look in some of these photos, as if she's dreaming of something better. I hope you've found what you've been looking for little one. Budu Saranai.

  • @fuckerrights As I understood from what I have read somewhere it wasn't even her phone. Some other girls had planted it in her bag. Unlike what the school wants people to believe, she was an innocent girl and a very good student. That's my understanding from all this. So tragic...

  • I dont know hw i ended up here probably too drunk now..anyway it is quite understandable to commit suicide such a young girl if some fucking idiot searching her own phone with her personal stuff if u knw e story. Only in sl, some fucking moron can search your own moile phn for porn, how on earth thts possible someone to take your phn into custody and search, fucking mental, whres the fundamental human fuckng rights law, nevermind the age or schooling or not, its fucking their phone, not yours.

  • R.I.P nangiya :'(

  • This was a break through in our lives down here in Sri Lanka. people made a real fuss over this tragic situation humiliating this sweet girl and her fellow students,Musaeus at whole. She was a friend of my girl friend, she had told me about her almost an year before this misfortune. I never thought this sweet innocent girl we talked about would face this. Her departure taught us many things. May this darling sis rest in peace! ~Faz Markar~
