Nobody knows how the six million figure was arrived at. But it is telling that the six million figure was also used during WWI to refer to the number of Jews allegedly suffering and in danger. That's a really big coincidence as Elaine might say on Seinfeld. If the six million figure had been arrived at legitimately it seems to me it would have been cut in half by the 3,000,000 reduction at Auschwitz. I mean, shouldn't the 6,000,000 have been arrived at by adding up the numbers from each camp?

Yes but 6 million is a total number of Jewish victims, not of Auschwitz alone, where around 1.1 million people died in total. 6 milions Poles died in WWII but 3 millions of these Poles were a followers of Judaism. Well ok, before the war in Poland lived 3 million Jews if we can call them that, because for me they were Poles as well. The war has survived around 280 thousand, 30 thousand decided to stay, the rest emigrated to Israel or US.

The six million figure has been popular since 1900, around the time the Zionist movement began. It was originally applied to the Russians who it was said were persecuting Jews. During the war well before the camps were liberated numerous newspapers mentioned the number. It is practically a state religion in Europe where it is against the law to question it. One young German was sent to prison for questioning it in his doctoral dissertation. So it's not surprising it survived a hit of 3 million.

He's off by over three million. Around 1990 the official death toll was reduced from four million to 1.5 million and since has been reduced by holocaust scholars to less than a million. And the majority of victims died from typhus toward the end of the war. Further, many of those who died were not Jewish. Strangely the six million figure wasn't changed.
