Helios Overture, Op. 17 (FS 32)

A 1903 concert overture by Danish composer Carl Nielsen (1865-1931). Nielsen composed this work while staying in Athens with his wife, a sculptor who was working on reproductions of ancient art in the Acropolis Museum. Nielsen described this overture, which depicts the sun rising above the Aegean Sea, as follows: "Silence and darkness, The sun rises with a joyous song of praise, It wanders its golden way and sinks quietly into the sea."

Conductor: Niklas Willén
South Jutland Symphony Orchestra

  • @Stricker I'll cry on my bed and carve his name properly on my balls to punish myself. Thank you for pointing that out.

  • A great work that is not played often enough in the UK. In fact, the only time you hear any of Neilsen's symphonies is when they are broadcast on the BBC and they are only recordings. Never live performances. A shame really.

  • as Niels said " I don't care how you spell my name so long as you listen to my music."

  • @Vonzaku Took me ages to learn it was en at the end!

  • I find Nielsen's music totally engrossing.....ever since I heard him as a young boy on Radio 3...touching, modern[ist] complex, disturbing. What more do you want from music!

  • Lol lovely!

  • @Vonzaku

NielsOn? How terribly Swedish of you to say!

  • Nielson is a badass.

  • @westminsterspin That's true. I love Nielsen's music since I was a boy, we were lucky and had a good shop in a small town, and he loved Nielsen. There are famous recordings though, with Göteborg SO/Järvi, and with Paavo Berglund and others. Nielsen has such a superb combination of dark moods with "uplifting" ideas. Underrated, really, in Germany too. all the best to you!

  • Interesting piece
