British couple Fiona and Nigel Dobson are sailing to Istanbul en route to India. They encounter a beautiful French woman, and that night Nigel meets her while dancing alone in the ship's bar. Later he meets her crippled American husband Oscar, who tells him their story. While living in Paris for several years trying to be a writer, he becomes obsessed with a woman he met by chance on a bus. He tracks her down and they start a steamy love affair. Soon Oscar finds himself enslaved body and soul by her love, and continues to tell Nigel the details of this relationship in various stages over a number of visits to Oscar's cabin.

  • Excellent film, I thought. Made me have a whole new respect for Peter Coyote. Also my introduction to both Hugh Grant and Kristin Scott-Thomas. She played a character named "Fiona" which is, coincidentally, the name of her character in "Four Weddings and a Funeral". AND Hugh Grant was her love interest (of sorts) in that one too. She has such a lovely neck. She was also in "Sarah's Key" -- another good movie from 2010 or so. Polanski -- "Frantic". I also liked that one. Ciao!

  • Hands down the best film Hugh Grant has ever appeared in, the only complaint, is the corny soundtrack, otherwise, and excellent film.

  • @Pipilotadream - I agree Pip, I have experienced the kind of love that made me become uttlerly and completely selfless (the opposite of selfish). I did everthing I could for the betterment of my loved one, even when he left me behind to pursue his career dreams. Today, I still feel only love and understanding without a trace of bitterness.

  • Nice Polanski movie and brilliant lead role by Coyete, like it a lot. Nice music by Vangelis too.

  • really want to watch this, but im scared ill never be able to look at hugh grant the same way again.

  • è un capolavoro

Love? Selfish? Love is the exact opposite of selfish. When you love someone, you don't ask if he loves you back. You don't need him/her to love you back. It is enough, it is totally enough that your heart is filled with Love. The only thing you need to know is that this person is happy and fine. And if anyone comes in anytime and say to you "Choose which person to die - you or him/her (the one you love)." You will not think about it. Not for a second. And die with a smile on your face.

  • @Pipilotadream

sure, but then again, when u think about it, isn't love one of the most selfish things in life?

  • Typical 90s garbage! Also the voicever by that pussy ass husband annoyed the fuck out of me, couldn't imagine watching the whole thing. Plus it was boring and stupid. Wasted a piece of my life. Gone!

  • @Pipilotadream did you watch the movie? that happens in it. But when people stop getting something back after "giving away their soul" then they turn bitter. There are millions of vengeful ex-lovers out their to attest to that.
