this is a simple way to measure the thickness of thrown pieces before trimming to get an accurate measurement of how much clay to trim off the foot and side walls carefully.

  • these are great tips!!! I just started teaching wheel and I'm totally going to use them! thanx!!!

  • this is a GREAT tip.... but I'm probably too lazy to do it! LOL

  • This is such a great tip - thanks for sharing!

  • Excellent tips! These would really have helped me when I was just learning to trim. I remember I destroyed about every second pot I made by trimming the bottom off. Nowadays, I suppose I have some sort of a "feel" of how thick the bottom is but bigger the pot is, the more difficult it is to get the "feel" right. And when trimming an extra big bowl, it is also very frustrating to have to turn it again to check if you've trimmed enough or not...

  • This is a great tip for the beginner (like myself). I know for those that do this often you "get a feel" for the base thickness. But until that time comes, this is an awesome tip!

  • Good tips! Thanks, David!

  • Thanks David! Never thought of figuring thickness like this. It will be a big help.

  • Good tips. Thanks.
